Metro Paris is the first augmented reality app to hit the app store. Finally an augmented reality app! Without a doubt augmented reality is just plain cool. To be able to see data points overlaid on your screen in real time is pretty awesome. What really makes this work is the digital compass included in the 3GS (sorry augmented reality apps will not work for 2G/3G/iPod Touch owners). I’m really hoping more of these start popping up soon for US cities, etc. It’ll definitely be interesting to see where people take this technology. Check out the youtube video (sorry audio is in French).

It would be interesting to hear other ideas on how this technology could be used besides just for map applications.
